Why I choose Canon

Hey there!

I thought I would start by stating why I chose the equipment I have. I have always enjoyed photography, but it wasn’t until I graduated high school that I actually picked up my first SLR. I had a small series of point & shoot digital cameras and hand-me-downs from Nikon, Sony, and Canon. I never really cared about the image, it was all just snapping pictures to listen to the shutter and mess around with the zoom functions. I started making dumb stop motion sword fighting friends videos with my friends in middle school, but they never left the camera. I wish I kept those because of how embarrassed I know I would be today if anyone saw it. But more importantly, I know everyone else would be more embarrassed.

One Christmas though, as fate would have it, I opened a big box, the biggest I ever got in Colorado. I saw the big red packaging under the wrapping paper, and I was already anxious with anticipation. I tore that paper to shreds. It was a Canon Rebel t3i. I couldn’t set up and rush out fast enough. I don’t think I opened another package for the next 3 days. I took photos of everything. I couldn’t stop. My mother absolutely nailed it that year. It could have been a Nikon or Sony, but I am glad it was Canon. Years later I’m more thankful it was Canon than anything else. I’ve worked under Canon’s Explorer’s of Light, and the unforgettable experiences alone taught me more than anyone in a photography class.

I carved my initials onto the built-in flash. I decided from that moment that I would keep that camera forever. I still have it, and take better care of it today than I take care of anything else. I still use it daily. It will never collect dust, and I will never take it for granted. It’s been a lifesaver from day one. I used it in my first wedding shoot, I used it as a backup when I had my 80D, my 6Dii, and for the events, I shoot with my newer EOS R.

The flip-out screen is what sold me then, and it’s crucial today. The color calibration for people is second to none, and the focus system is only out-paced by their lenses. I own everything Canon, and will only ever use Canon. I’ve used other lenses on my cameras, I’ve used other cameras. Any other brand pales in comparison to all the things I like to do.

Sony may be the next best, and Panasonic has its uses, but Nikon and I will never be friends.

Ultimately it’s the carpenter behind their tools, but I know a buzzsaw is a lot more effective than a knife.
